Shopify mobile app vs PWA: which one should your store choose?

A progressive web app (PWA) is your website with a few extras: shoppers can add it to their home screen, and it can cache pages and send web push notifications. A native app is downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Both can sell your Shopify products; they differ in how customers find them, how reliably you can reach them, and what you have to maintain. Here is an honest comparison.

1. Home screen presence

A native app gets an icon on the home screen as soon as it is installed from the store, a step most shoppers already know. A PWA has to be added manually: on iPhone, shoppers open your site in Safari, tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”. Android browsers such as Chrome can show an install prompt, which makes it easier. In practice, few shoppers find the iPhone steps on their own, so you have to explain them.

2. Push notifications on iPhone and Android

  • Native app — push works on iOS and Android once the shopper accepts the permission prompt. This is the main retention channel of a shopping app.
  • PWA on Android — web push is supported in the major browsers once the shopper allows it.
  • PWA on iPhone — web push is only available since iOS 16.4, and only after the shopper has added your site to the home screen and then accepted notifications. Shoppers who just browse your site in Safari can't receive it.

If push notifications are the reason you want an app — new arrivals, abandoned carts, sale launches — the extra steps on iPhone matter. Our push notifications guide covers what to send once you can reach shoppers.

3. App Store and Google Play discoverability

A native app has a listing on the App Store and Google Play: shoppers can search for your brand there, read reviews and install from a link or QR code. A PWA is not listed on the App Store. On Google Play, a PWA can be wrapped as a Trusted Web Activity, but that is a separate Android project and store listing to maintain, and it does not help on iPhone. Store listings also come with review and policy requirements — see how to publish on Google Play and the App Store.

4. Offline use

Both can work partly offline. A PWA uses a service worker to cache pages it has already loaded; a native app can keep its interface and recently viewed content on the device. Either way, prices, stock and checkout need a connection, so for a store “offline” mostly means showing something useful instead of an error page on a weak network.

5. Performance and experience

A well-built PWA can be fast, and a badly built native app can be slow — the technology alone does not decide. The differences are elsewhere: a native app keeps its screens on the device, has native navigation and gestures, and does not show browser controls. A PWA stays a web page underneath, so it depends on the shopper's browser and on how your theme and third-party scripts load.

6. Cost and maintenance

  • PWA — no developer accounts and no store review. A Shopify theme is a mobile-friendly website, but making it an installable PWA usually takes a third-party app or custom code, and every theme or script change affects it.
  • Native app — you need an Apple Developer Program membership ($99 per year) and a Google Play Console account ($25 one-time), and each update goes through store review. Custom development also means keeping up with new iOS and Android versions; an app builder handles that for you for a subscription (see Mobilefy pricing).

7. When a PWA is enough

  • Most of your traffic is one-off visits from ads or search, with little repeat buying.
  • Your customers are mostly on Android, where install prompts and web push are simpler.
  • You are testing demand and not ready to manage store listings yet.

A native app makes more sense when repeat customers drive a large part of your sales, when you want to reach iPhone shoppers with push notifications, or when customers search for your brand on the App Store and Google Play. Many stores keep a mobile-friendly website for new visitors and use the app for loyal customers.
